In 2025, the 500th anniversary of the Latvian book will be celebrated. Noting the importance and influence of the written word in society throughout the centuries, the National Library of Latvia (NLL) started a multi-year cycle of events "Latvian book 500" in 2020. To highlight the diversity of book publishing, each year of the cycle has its own theme. The theme of 2023 is distribution and publication of books and ideas, especially highlighting the 150th anniversary of the Latvian publisher Ansis Gulbis. In order to shed light on places and personalities related to Latvian book publishing, promote public participation and strengthen the identity of the local community, the NLL has prepared a video essay on the publisher, translator and pedagogue Andrejs Jesens (1873–1958) in cooperation with the Bauska Central Library.
