International Seminar “Latvian Writings and Writings in the Baltics in the 16th-19th centuries”


On 10 January 2025, the 15th international seminar “Latvian Writings and Writings in the Baltics in the 16th-19th centuries: Current Research and Challenges” dedicated to the study of early writings from various perspectives was held. This year, the seminar was organized by the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Latvia in collaboration with the National Library of Latvia.

 

The interdisciplinary seminar was attended by linguists and literary scholars who presented their latest research and findings. Researchers representing universities and research institutions in Latvia, Lithuania and Sweden presented their work at the seminar.

 

Researchers focused on various aspects of language, writing and book history: Georg Mancelius’ contribution to the development of the Latvian language, the history of writings in the 19th century, the contribution of Latvian and Lithuanian researchers of the 20th century, the importance of manuscripts in understanding the history of language, and issues of lexical history. There were also presentations dedicated to the 17th century Greek texts, early printed collections, and other cultural-historical topics.
